When Washington, D.C. judge Frederick Sullivan said that our customer Adam Kokesh was “a very dangerous man” late last month, we sprang into action once again in Adam’s defense. In order to destroy a good person, you must first destroy that person’s reputation. That’s what this judge was attempting to do: paint Adam as a dangerous, violent man in order to justify caging him.
But he’s not. Anyone who knows Adam Kokesh knows that he lives by the non-aggression principle. Video after video show that Adam is capable of remaining nonviolent even as state agents throw, choke or forcefully drag him away.
When you are arrested, you are forcibly confined to a cage without access to TV, radio or internet. You may not even know what you are being charged with until the judge convenes your initial hearing. Can you call out? Can you mount a legal or public relations defense? Nope. Even the movie cliche that you get a phone call upon being arrested is fiction more often than not these days.
Judges, prosecutors and the mainstream media, on the other hand, are free to issue statements such as the one this judge Sullivan made about Adam. The media echo and amplify this state narrative to the friends, family, allies, other media outlets, potential jurors and the general public. You are silenced. You can not defend yourself and those closest to you can be intimidated and silenced as well, if not by the state and mainstream media then by community members who accept the state narrative without question and proceed to ostracize the people you are counting on to defend you in your absence. If it can be overwhelming for activists, imagine how the uninitiated feel.
This is why it is so important to have Shield Mutual protection. We can counter the state narrative. And we won’t be intimidated.
“My Friend Adam is a Peaceful Person”
In Adam’s case, we put together the “My Friend Adam” campaign. Our goal was to counter the state narrative through short personal video testimonials in which people who know Adam spoke straight from the heart about what kind of a person he really is. I hoped that Adam’s large fan base would jump at this opportunity, that we would produce hundreds of videos, that the mainstream media would take notice, that judge Sullivan would see the best ones on TV over his breakfast and that we could ultimately help Adam get bail. Adam needs to get out ASAP in order to defend himself and salvage his business.
We reached more than 60,000 people, I estimate, with this innovative project, among YouTube views, 4,000 unique visitors at the MyFriendAdam.org website, social media traffic and an interview on the Scott Horton show. Community members produced more than 70 videos, which you can see in the playlist below.
Why didn’t this project reach its full potential? It’s August. A lot of people are on vacation. Beyond the fact that producing any kind of content whatsoever is a challenge for many people, video is seen as one of the most difficult. It’s not. Many computers today come with a webcam and microphone. That and YouTube and you’re good to go in no time at all with zero editing skills and zero uploading. I got the sense also that some people are afraid of speaking out for Adam Kokesh because they don’t want to be the next targets. Others believe that his activism involving firearms gives the public a wrong and dangerous idea about libertarians. I tend to agree on that final point but I also believe that if we cut loose people in our community who haven’t harmed or threatened aggression against anyone, then we’re ultimately hurting ourselves as well.
In any case, I feel good about the project. It’s the first one of its kind that I have done. I plan to build on the concept in the future. As our movement becomes more influential, the corresponding resistance to it will become even greater. We need a well-organized, professional public relations operation to defend ourselves. Shield Mutual has a large role to play in that operation.
Oh Right, the Judicial Butthurt!
And then I got this message from one of Adam’s interns at his Adam vs. The Man show. The judge who is running the show for Virginia’s felony charges against Adam apparently doesn’t like something on the MyFriendAdam.org site. He wants me to take MyFriendAdam.org down.
I won’t be doing that voluntarily.
